It's well worth a visit.
You won't know until you go, and once you're there, you'll be shocked. Everything is great except for the inconvenient transportation.
I suggest taking the sightseeing bus. In the end, we still took the bus down. It's really big inside, and there was a lot we didn't get to see. We visited the Grand Buddha, the performances, the Bodhi Cave, and the temples. We didn't make it to the Confucius statue or the Great Wall—we only saw them from a distance.

Top sites (Forbidden City, Badaling Great Wall) use timed-entry and sell out in peak season — book 1–3 days ahead. Most 3A/4A areas sell tickets at the gate.
Bring your passport: entrances at national scenic areas may check ID, and some issue foreign-visitor tickets at a manual window rather than the machines.
Show the Chinese name on the taxi card to your driver, or scan the QR — it opens turn-by-turn navigation in Amap.
Make a bilingual card for any destination — works offline.
